Pseudoexfoliation syndrome in a patient with lattice corneal dystrophy

Summary

A rare case of lattice corneal dystrophy type I was found with pseudoexfoliation syndrome in a 70-year-old woman. This specific combination has not been previously documented in individuals without systemic amyloidosis.

Background:

Lattice corneal dystrophy type I is an inherited condition affecting the cornea.
Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is a condition that can lead to increased eye pressure and glaucoma.
Systemic amyloidosis involves the buildup of amyloid proteins in organs, including the eye.

Observation:

A 70-year-old female patient presented with symptoms of lattice corneal dystrophy type I.
The patient also exhibited signs of pseudoexfoliation syndrome during examination.
No evidence of systemic amyloidosis was found in the patient.

Findings:

This case represents the first reported instance of lattice corneal dystrophy type I co-occurring with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.
The association was observed in a patient without systemic amyloidosis, a previously undocumented scenario.

Implications:

This finding may suggest a potential, previously unrecognized link between these two distinct ocular conditions.
Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and genetic factors involved in this association.
Understanding this link could lead to improved diagnostic and management strategies for patients with either condition.
