Summary

Chess expertise acquisition in adults may not depend on visual memory. This study found no correlation between chess skill and visual memory ability in adult players, suggesting visuospatial intelligence is less important for developing chess mastery.

Background:

The relationship between general cognitive abilities and expertise acquisition in knowledge-rich domains like chess remains debated.
