Summary

Torulopsis petrophilum produces different surfactants based on the carbon source. The synthesized glycolipid surfactants are identical to those from T. bombicola.

Background:

Torulopsis petrophilum is known to produce extracellular surfactants.
The type of surfactant produced may vary depending on environmental conditions or nutrient availability.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the influence of different substrates on the type of surfactant synthesized by Torulopsis petrophilum.
To characterize the synthesized glycolipid surfactants and compare them to known compounds.

Culturing Torulopsis petrophilum on various carbon sources.
Extraction and purification of synthesized surfactants.
Chemical analysis and comparison of isolated glycolipids.

Main Results:

Torulopsis petrophilum synthesized either a glycolipid surfactant or a protein emulsifier, contingent on the substrate provided.
The produced glycolipids were found to be identical to those previously isolated from Torulopsis bombicola.
Surfactant production was not linked to the facilitation of insoluble carbon source uptake.

Conclusions:

Substrate availability dictates the type of biosurfactant produced by Torulopsis petrophilum.
The glycolipid surfactants synthesized by T. petrophilum are biochemically indistinguishable from those of T. bombicola.
Biosurfactant production in this yeast is not primarily for nutrient acquisition from insoluble sources.
