Purification and immunohistochemical study of actin in mitochondrial matrix

Summary

Researchers discovered and purified actin within rat liver mitochondria. This mitochondrial actin, identified by its molecular weight and antibody binding, is located in the matrix and inner membrane, and can polymerize in vitro.

Background:

Actin is a crucial protein in eukaryotic cells, primarily known for its role in muscle contraction and the cytoskeleton.
Its presence and function within mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell, are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the presence and characteristics of actin within rat liver mitochondria.
To determine the localization and functional properties of mitochondrial actin.
