Evolution of RFID Applications in Construction: A Literature Review

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology enhances construction processes throughout a building's lifecycle. This review explores current RFID developments, limitations, and future potential in the construction industry.

Background:

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has seen significant adoption in construction over the past 20 years.
RFID systems offer enhanced control over various processes during a building's lifecycle, from initial design to occupancy and maintenance.

Purpose of the Study:

To provide a comprehensive review of RFID applications within the construction industry.
To identify current advancements, existing limitations, and research gaps in the field of RFID for construction.

Main Methods:

Literature review of RFID applications across four key facility lifecycle stages: planning and design, construction, commissioning, and operation and maintenance.
Presentation of a specific RFID application for identifying furniture in occupied spaces during the operation and maintenance phase.

Main Results:

RFID technology is established across all major stages of the facility lifecycle.
A novel RFID application is proposed for furniture identification in inhabited environments, addressing challenges in the operation and maintenance phase.

Conclusions:

RFID technology offers substantial benefits for managing construction projects and building lifecycles.
