Smartphone Apps for Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review

Summary

Smartphone apps show high feasibility for schizophrenia care, with excellent patient engagement and satisfaction. More research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of these mobile health interventions.

Background:

Growing interest in mobile technologies for schizophrenia patient care.
Limited evidence on the feasibility and effectiveness of smartphone apps in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review the literature on smartphone applications for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
To assess the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of mobile health interventions.

Main Methods:

Comprehensive database search (MEDLINE, Cochrane, PsycINFO, Embase) conducted in May 2015.
Systematic review of eligible studies.
Proportional meta-analyses for recruitment, retention, and adherence data.

Main Results:

Seven eligible articles identified from 226 results, reporting on 5 studies.
High overall retention rate (92%) and consistent app usage (>85% of days).
Participants averaged 3.95 daily interactions and responded to 71.9% of automated prompts, reporting positive user experience.

Conclusions:

Published literature provides strong evidence for the feasibility of smartphone interventions in schizophrenia care.
High engagement and satisfaction indicate significant potential for mobile technology.
Further research is required to establish the efficacy of these interventions.
