Analysis of spatial structure in eccentric vision

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the encoding of spatial structure in both central and eccentric vision.
To determine if the perception of relative positions between pattern elements is consistent across the visual field.

A two-alternative forced-choice task was employed.
Observers discriminated between identical and mirror-symmetric patterns of short line segments.
Psychometric functions were measured by varying pattern size at different eccentricities to find the 75% correct response threshold.

A scaling factor was identified for discriminating between mirror-symmetric and identical patterns.
This scaling factor was found to be independent of eccentricity.
The determined scaling factor closely matched previously proposed size-scaling for vernier acuity tasks.
