Oxygen-free radicals and lipid peroxidation in adult respiratory distress syndrome

Summary

Reactive oxygen species contribute to acute lung injury. In adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), these oxygen radicals cause lipid peroxidation, damaging lung cells and potentially driving disease progression.

Background:

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are implicated in acute lung injury.
In adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), polymorphonuclear leukocytes infiltrate the lungs and release excessive O2-derived products.
These oxygen species can initiate lipid peroxidation in cellular membranes.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the role of oxygen species in acute lung injury.
To explore the mechanism of lipid peroxidation in ARDS pathogenesis.

Main Methods:

Review of existing literature on ROS and ARDS.
Analysis of cellular mechanisms involved in oxygen radical-induced damage.

Activated oxygen species mediate acute lung injury.
