Summary

Keloids and hypertrophic scars cause significant discomfort. Current research indicates neither surgical nor non-surgical treatments are definitively superior for abnormal scar management.

Keloids and hypertrophic scars are abnormal scar formations with distinct clinical characteristics.
These conditions can lead to pain, itching, and ulcerations, impacting patient quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

To review current therapies for keloids and hypertrophic scars.
To evaluate guidelines for excisional vs. non-excisional treatments for abnormal scarring.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature search of the Web of Science database.
Keywords included "keloid," "hypertrophic scars," and "treatment."
Focus on randomized control trials (RCTs) published between 2014-2019.

Main Results:

Initial searches yielded over 1100 articles for each scar type.
After filtering for publication dates and duplicates, 15 RCTs were selected for review.
Data analysis focused on treatment efficacy and recurrence rates.

Conclusions:

Keloids and hypertrophic scars pose a clinical challenge.
Current evidence does not favor excisional with adjuvant therapy over non-surgical treatments, or vice versa.
Further research is required to establish definitive treatment guidelines and compare recurrence rates.
