Summary

We developed a simple lithography technique to create surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators on optical fibers. This method enables fabrication of microresonators with nanoscale to microscale radius variations for diverse photonic applications.

Background:

Microresonator devices are crucial for various photonic applications.
Existing fabrication methods for surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators have limitations in controlling fiber radius variation.

Purpose of the Study:

To present a novel, simple lithographic method for fabricating SNAP microresonators on optical fiber surfaces.
To demonstrate the capability of the developed method for creating microresonators with a wide range of radius variations.

Main Methods:

A focused CO2 laser beam is used to selectively remove polymer coating from specific fiber surface areas.
Hydrofluoric acid etching is employed, utilizing the remaining coating as a mask.
Complete fiber segment de-coating yields silica bottle microresonators with controlled radius variations.

Main Results:

Fabrication of a chain of five microresonators (1 mm long, 30 nm high) on a 125 µm fiber.
Fabrication of a single microresonator (0.5 mm long, 291 nm high) on a 38 µm fiber.
Demonstration of a rectangular SNAP microresonator as a miniature delay line with 1 ns delay and negligible dispersion.

Conclusions:

The developed lithographic method offers a simple and versatile approach for SNAP microresonator fabrication.
This technique allows for significantly larger fiber radius variations (nanoscale to microscale) compared to previous methods.
The fabricated SNAP microresonators show potential for applications such as miniature delay lines.
