Summary

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the water retention properties of soil amended with different biochars.
To evaluate the influence of pyrolysis temperature, feedstock type, and soil density.
To determine optimal biochar amendment strategies for water retention.

Main Methods:

Three biochars (water hyacinth, chicken manure, wood) were produced at varying pyrolysis temperatures.
Biochars were amended to soil at 5% and 10% (w/w%).
Water retention was assessed under controlled drying/wetting cycles (50-90% RH) in loose and dense soil states.

Main Results:

10% water hyacinth biochar (WHB) produced at 300°C showed the highest water retention.
Chicken manure biochar (CMB) generally outperformed wood biochar (WB) at a 10% amendment rate.
All tested biochar types (300°C and 600°C) at 10% significantly improved water retention in both soil densities.

Conclusions:

Biochar amendment, particularly WHB at 300°C and 10% concentration, substantially enhances soil water retention.
Pyrolysis temperature, feedstock, and soil compaction are critical factors influencing biochar effectiveness.
Biochar application offers a promising strategy for improving soil water management in diverse applications.
