Summary

More clinical trials on artificial intelligence (AI) are needed in emergency and intensive care units. Sponsors should improve reporting of trial results to advance AI in critical care settings.

Background:

Clinical trials are crucial for advancing medical practice.
The current landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) trials in emergency and intensive care settings is not well-documented.
This study analyzes registered AI trials in these critical care environments.

Purpose of the Study:

To comprehensively analyze the characteristics of registered trials involving artificial intelligence (AI) in emergency departments (ED) and intensive care units (ICU).
To identify trends, sponsors, study designs, and outcomes of AI research in critical care.

Main Methods:

A systematic search of ClinicalTrials.gov was conducted for AI trials in ED and ICU up to January 12, 2021.
Data on trial characteristics, including location, enrollment, sponsorship, and design, were extracted and analyzed.
Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0 software.

Main Results:

146 AI trials were identified (61 in ED, 85 in ICU) registered between 2004 and 2021.
Universities were the primary sponsors (43.15%), followed by hospitals (35.62%).
Of completed trials, only 10 had publicly available results on ClinicalTrials.gov, indicating a significant reporting gap.

Conclusions:

There is a need for increased clinical trial activity focusing on AI applications in emergency and intensive care settings.
Enhancing the reporting of trial results on platforms like ClinicalTrials.gov is essential for transparency and knowledge dissemination.
Further research and sponsorship are encouraged to bolster AI development and implementation in critical care.
