A conflicts' classification for IoT-based services: a comparative survey

Summary

Internet of Things (IoT) systems face safety and security risks due to app interactions. Existing conflict detection methods leave gaps, highlighting the need for advanced verification tools to ensure IoT system reliability.

Background:

Internet of Things (IoT) systems are integral to modern life, enabling intelligent environments and device control.
End-user developed IoT apps interact, leading to critical safety, security, and correctness issues.
Existing solutions for IoT app development and conflict mitigation are insufficient.

Purpose of the Study:

To classify and detect conflicts in Internet of Things (IoT) systems.
To investigate and compare existing research techniques for IoT conflict classification and detection (2014-2020).
To identify gaps in current approaches and propose a new classification method.

Main Methods:

A novel classification of IoT-based application interaction conflicts is proposed.
Utilized Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) model checking and formal notations for a priori conflict detection.
Compared existing detection approaches against the proposed classification.

Main Results:

Existing IoT conflict detection approaches exhibit significant gaps in covering various conflict levels and types.
This coverage gap compromises the overall correctness and safety of IoT systems.
The proposed classification method offers a priori detection based on app instruction analysis.

Conclusions:

There is a critical need for developing specialized safety and security compilers or tools for IoT systems.
A hybrid approach combining model checking with diverse languages and semantic technologies is recommended for future verification frameworks.
Future frameworks must cover all conflict levels and types to enhance IoT system safety, security, and correctness.
