Accuracy of the SWAY Mobile Cognitive Assessment Application

Summary

The SWAY Cognitive Assessment (SWAY CA) mobile application reliably operates on various devices and operating systems for cognitive function testing. It demonstrates validity comparable to the ImPACT QT application for reaction time assessment.

Background:

Mobile electronic devices are crucial for portable cognitive function assessment post-injury.
SWAY Medical, Inc. developed the SWAY Cognitive Assessment (SWAY CA) application using motion-based technology.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the reliability of the SWAY CA application across different mobile devices and operating systems (iOS, Android).
To assess the validity of the SWAY CA application against the FDA-approved ImPACT QT mobile application.

Main Methods:

An observational study of validity involving 88 healthy young adults (18-48 years).
Participants completed randomized reaction time tests using SWAY CA and ImPACT QT on various iOS and Android devices.

Main Results:

SWAY CA demonstrated reliable operation on iPhone 6S, Samsung Galaxy S9, and iPad Pro 5 (p > 0.05).
SWAY CA reaction time measures showed agreement with ImPACT QT (r = -0.46 to 0.22, p ≤ 0.05).
SWAY CA impulse control and inspection time measures showed weak correlations with ImPACT QT reaction time measures (r = -0.25 to -0.46, p ≤ 0.05).

Conclusions:

The SWAY CA mobile application reliably functions across diverse mobile devices and operating systems.
SWAY CA is a valid tool for assessing reaction time, comparable to the ImPACT QT application.
