Coronary heart disease and water hardness in Scotland--is there a relationship?

Background:

Scotland exhibits one of the world's highest coronary heart disease mortality rates.
Significant geographical variations in mortality exist within Scotland.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between water hardness and coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality in Scotland.
To determine if geographical variations in CHD mortality can be explained by water hardness levels.

Main Methods:

Collected water hardness data from Regional Water Authorities across Scotland.
Analyzed the association between geographical variations in water hardness and coronary mortality rates.

Main Results:

A weak negative association was observed between water hardness and coronary mortality.
The observed association is significantly weaker than that reported in international studies.
Geographical variations in coronary mortality rates in Scotland are not explained by water hardness.

Conclusions:

Water hardness does not appear to be a significant explanatory factor for the geographical variation in coronary heart disease mortality in Scotland.
Further research is needed to understand the factors contributing to Scotland's high CHD mortality rates.
