Posttraumatic development of hallux valgus

Summary

Uncommon foot injuries like crush or gunshot wounds can cause fractures. These fractures, if improperly healed, may lead to hallux valgus, or bunions.

Background:

Hallux valgus (bunions) is a common foot deformity.
Etiology typically involves genetic and biomechanical factors.
Traumatic etiologies are less frequently documented.

Observation:

Two patients presented with symptomatic hallux valgus.
Both patients had a history of significant foot trauma.
Specific injuries included crush injury and gunshot wound.

Findings:

The trauma resulted in metatarsal bone fractures.
Malunion of the second metatarsal occurred in one case.
Malunion of an avulsed fracture at the proximal phalanx base caused deformity.

Implications:

Trauma should be considered in hallux valgus etiology.
Fracture malunion can be a direct cause of bunions.
Further research into traumatic hallux valgus is warranted.
