Summary

Cockroaches filter sensory feedback during flight by moving their cerci. This movement mechanically blocks nerve signals, preventing overstimulation and protecting escape response pathways.

Locomotion generates sensory feedback that can perturb neural processing.
Cockroaches use cerci, abdominal sensory appendages, during flight.
Cerci possess wind-receptive hairs sensitive to flight-induced wind.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate a nonsynaptic mechanism for filtering sensory feedback during cockroach locomotion.
To determine how cerci movement affects sensory nerve activity during flight.

Experimental displacement of cockroach cerci.
Recording of action potentials in the sensory nerve.
Assessment of nerve activity with and without central nervous system connections.

Main Results:

Cercal displacement blocked 33-50% of action potentials in the sensory nerve.
This nerve signal block occurred independently of the central nervous system.
The block was attributed to mechanical pressure on the nerve near the cercal joint.

Conclusions:

Cockroaches employ a nonsynaptic mechanism to filter sensory input during locomotion.
Mechanical pressure on peripheral nerves due to joint movement can modulate neural activity.
This mechanism may protect against habituation of sensory pathways, preserving critical responses.
