Metal release from heat-treated orthodontic archwires

Summary

Heat treatment significantly increases metal release from orthodontic wires. Cobalt-chromium wires release more metals than stainless steel, especially when heated above 500°C, impacting clinical use.

Orthodontic archwires are essential for tooth movement.
Biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of orthodontic materials are critical.
Heat treatment is sometimes used in orthodontic procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effect of heat treatment on metal ion release from stainless steel and cobalt-chromium orthodontic archwires.
To compare the corrosion behavior of these materials in artificial saliva.

Main Methods:

Immersion corrosion testing of as-received and heat-treated archwires.
Analysis of released metals (iron, cobalt, nickel) in artificial saliva after 1 week.
Heat treatment applied for 1 minute at various temperatures.

Main Results:

Cobalt-chromium wires released more metals than stainless steel in the as-received state.
Metal release from stainless steel increased significantly at ≥400°C.
Metal release from cobalt-chromium increased significantly at ~500°C, becoming 15-60 times higher at elevated temperatures.

Conclusions:

Heat treatment above critical temperatures dramatically increases metal ion release from orthodontic archwires.
Clinicians should be aware of the temperature thresholds that compromise the corrosion resistance of these materials.
Further consideration is needed for procedures involving heat application to orthodontic wires.
