Summary

Splenic artery aneurysms may result from increased splenic blood flow, potentially linked to portasystemic shunts and portal hypertension. This study measured blood flow in three patients, revealing significant splenic blood flow increases.

Background:

Splenic artery aneurysm is an uncommon vascular disease.
Portal hypertension can affect the portal venous system.
Understanding the hemodynamics of splenic artery aneurysms is crucial.

Observation:

Blood flow volume in the portal venous system was measured in three patients with splenic artery aneurysm using an ultrasonic duplex system.
A significant increase in splenic blood flow volume was observed in all patients.
Two patients presented with a large portasystemic shunt allowing hepatofugal portal blood flow.

Findings:

The study found a substantial increase in splenic blood flow volume in patients with splenic artery aneurysm.
The presence of a portasystemic shunt was associated with increased splenic blood flow.
This increased flow is suspected to contribute to splenic artery aneurysm formation.

Implications:

Portasystemic shunts may play a role in the pathogenesis of splenic artery aneurysms.
Increased splenic blood flow is a potential etiological factor for splenic artery aneurysms.
Further research is warranted to elucidate the relationship between shunts, portal hypertension, and splenic artery aneurysm development.
