Effect of atrial fibrillation and mitral regurgitation on calculated mitral valve area in mitral stenosis

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the accuracy of Doppler echocardiography in measuring mitral valve orifice area in patients with mitral stenosis.
• To determine if mitral regurgitation (MR) or atrial fibrillation (AF) influence the accuracy of Doppler-derived mitral valve area calculations.
• To compare Doppler echocardiography measurements with 2-D echocardiography and cardiac catheterization.

• Forty-nine patients with mitral stenosis underwent Doppler and 2-D echocardiography.
• Mitral valve area was calculated using the pressure half-time method with Doppler ultrasound.
• Twenty-four patients also underwent cardiac catheterization for comparison.
