Summary

Low-level direct current (DC) stimulation enhances bone ingrowth into titanium implants. Specifically, 5 and 20 microA currents applied to cathode implants significantly increased bone formation in rabbits.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effect of different direct current (DC) levels on bone ingrowth into a titanium implant.
To determine the optimal DC parameters for enhancing osteogenesis around a cathode implant.

Main Methods:

A dividable titanium implant was inserted into the tibial metaphysis of rabbits.
The implant served as a cathode and was connected to a stimulator delivering 5, 20, or 50 microA DC.
Control implants in the contralateral tibia received no stimulation.
Bone ingrowth was numerically evaluated.

Main Results:

A 2.4-fold increase in bone formation was observed with 5 microA DC.
A 2.6-fold increase in bone formation was observed with 20 microA DC.
50 microA DC resulted in a 48% decrease in bone volume.

Conclusions:

Direct current (DC) levels of 5 and 20 microA enhance bone ingrowth into titanium implants acting as cathodes.
Higher DC levels (50 microA) inhibit bone formation.
Cathodal placement of the implant appears more effective for promoting osteogenesis compared to previous studies.
