Copper on intrauterine devices stimulates leukocyte exudation

Summary

Metallic copper in animal reproductive tracts causes a significant, long-lasting immune cell response without causing harm. This may explain how copper enhances the effectiveness of intrauterine contraceptive devices.

Background:

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) are widely used for birth control.
Copper-based IUCDs are known for their high efficacy.
The precise mechanism by which copper enhances IUCD antifertility effects requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the local biological response to metallic copper within the reproductive and abdominal cavities.
To determine the duration and nature of the cellular response induced by copper.
To explore the potential link between copper-induced inflammation and antifertility effects.

Main Methods:

Metallic copper was implanted into the uterine and abdominal cavities of rats and monkeys.
Cellular exudates were analyzed over a 7-month period.
Local tissue and systemic effects were monitored for signs of damage or toxicity.

Main Results:

Copper induced a substantial local influx of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (immune cells).
This cellular response persisted for at least 7 months.
No significant local tissue damage or systemic toxicity was observed in the animals.

Conclusions:

Metallic copper elicits a prolonged, localized inflammatory response in the reproductive tract.
The observed immune response does not cause significant tissue damage.
Copper's ability to modulate the local environment may contribute to the enhanced antifertility effect of copper IUCDs.
