Carbon dioxide response curves during hypothermia

Summary

Medullary chemoreceptor responsiveness to CO2 decreases with hypothermia in dogs. In deep hypothermia, peripheral chemoreceptors and shivering may drive ventilation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate medullary chemoreceptor responsiveness during normothermia and hypothermia in anesthetized dogs.
To assess the contribution of peripheral chemoreceptors and shivering to ventilation during hypothermia.

Main Methods:

Anesthetized dogs were subjected to hypercapnia under hyperoxia.
Ventilatory responses were measured at normothermia (37-38°C), moderate hypothermia (32-33°C), and deep hypothermia (28-29°C).

Main Results:

Ventilatory response to CO2 significantly decreased with lower blood temperatures, becoming absent in deep hypothermia.
Oxygen drive of ventilation remained consistent across temperatures, approximately one-fourth of spontaneous ventilation.

Conclusions:

Medullary chemoreceptor function is impaired by hypothermia.
In deep hypothermia, ventilation may be primarily driven by peripheral chemoreceptors and potentially shivering.
