Amyloidosis of Waldeyer's ring. A clinical and ultrastructural report

Summary

A rare case of amyloidosis was found in the tonsil, nasopharynx, and base of tongue, a condition previously unreported in Waldeyer's ring. This unique organ-limited amyloidosis highlights a novel presentation of the disease.

Background:

Amyloidosis is a group of diseases characterized by the deposition of amyloid fibrils.
Waldeyer's ring amyloidosis has not been previously documented.

Observation:

A 35-year-old patient presented with asymptomatic amyloidosis affecting the tonsil, nasopharynx, and base of tongue.
Systemic amyloidosis was ruled out through clinical evaluation and biopsies of rectal and buccal mucosa.

Findings:

Electron microscopy confirmed the presence of typical amyloid fibrils.
Phagocytic cells surrounding the amyloid deposits showed unique ultrastructural features.
This case represents a unique type of organ-limited amyloidosis within Waldeyer's ring.

Implications:

This report expands the known spectrum of amyloidosis presentations.
Understanding organ-limited amyloidosis may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Further research into the pathogenesis of Waldeyer's ring amyloidosis is warranted.
