Summary

Visual pitch significantly impacts perceived eye level, but visual slant does not similarly affect the perception of straight ahead. This study explores the differing influences of visual cues on spatial orientation.

Background:

The visual field strongly influences egocentric spatial localization.
Previous research shows prism-induced visual pitch and slant mislocalize visually perceived eye level (VPEL) and visually perceived straight ahead (VPSA).
Muscle paresis in darkness also causes similar VPEL and VPSA mislocalizations, corrected by a visual field.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if real visual slant influences VPSA similarly to how visual pitch influences VPEL.
To determine the quantitative relationship between visual field slant and VPSA.
To compare the susceptibility of VPEL and VPSA to visual influences.

Main Methods:

Participants viewed visual fields with varying degrees of pitch and slant.
Measurements were taken of visually perceived eye level (VPEL) and visually perceived straight ahead (VPSA).
The study analyzed the linear relationship between visual field orientation and spatial localization judgments.

Main Results:

VPEL elevation changed linearly with visual field pitch.
However, VPSA did not show a corresponding change with visual field slant.
The VPEL-versus-pitch function slope was +0.40, while the VPSA-versus-slant function slope was indistinguishable from 0.00.

Conclusions:

Visual pitch significantly affects VPEL, but visual slant does not similarly affect VPSA.
This suggests a differential sensitivity of vertical versus horizontal spatial localization to visual field orientation.
Factors like eye position, gravity, and retinal gradients may contribute to this difference.
