Hallucinatory experiences of psychiatric patients in seclusion

Summary

Seclusion in psychiatric care may affect patient perceptions. This study found hallucinations during seclusion were common, but not solely caused by sensory deprivation, with no link to seclusion duration or staff visits.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore seclusion experiences in severely ill psychiatric patients.
To describe patient hallucinations during seclusion.
To examine links between hallucinations, sensory stimulation (staff visits, seclusion duration), and treatment.

Main Methods:

Descriptive study involving 25 psychiatric inpatients (schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder).
Interviews conducted within 5 days post-seclusion using a modified structured interview guide.
Analysis of hallucinations, staff visits, seclusion duration, and medication use.

Main Results:

Approximately 50% of patients experienced hallucinations during seclusion.
Most hallucinating patients (70%) had prior hallucination history.
No significant correlation found between seclusion hallucinations and staff visit frequency or seclusion length.
Hallucinating patients received more PRN medications and therapeutic visits.

Conclusions:

Hallucinations during seclusion are not solely attributable to sensory deprivation.
Patient history and other factors likely influence hallucinations in seclusion.
Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay of factors affecting hallucinations in psychiatric patients during seclusion.
