Summary

Background:

Type I diabetes mellitus (T1DM) management requires precise glucose-insulin balance.

Observation:

A 41-year-old male T1DM patient experienced frequent hypo- and hyperglycaemic episodes.
The patient's glycaemic control was suboptimal, posing risks of severe hypoglycaemia.
Hospitalization was required to improve the patient's glycaemic management.

Findings:

AIDA, a prototype computer system, integrates a glucose-insulin interaction model with a knowledge base.
AIDA provides glycaemic predictions and insulin dosage adjustment recommendations.
The system quantifies insulin action and carbohydrate absorption for personalized therapy.

Implications:

AIDA can serve as a clinical decision support tool for daily T1DM management.
The system can simulate patient responses to altered insulin and dietary regimens.
AIDA offers an educational platform for patients to learn self-management of insulin therapy and diet.
