Adaptation of suppression as an explanation of enhancement effects

Summary

Signal enhancement in hearing is closely related to masker enhancement. However, the study found no evidence that adaptation of suppression explains these enhancement effects.

Background:

Temporal delays between signals and maskers can improve signal audibility.
Previous research suggested this 'signal enhancement' might stem from adapting auditory suppression.
Viemeister and Bacon proposed that masker enhancement could be linked to signal enhancement.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between masker enhancement, signal enhancement, and two-tone suppression.
To test the hypothesis that adaptation of suppression underlies signal enhancement effects.

Main Methods:

Measured masker enhancement, signal enhancement, and two-tone suppression in six human subjects.
Varied masker-enhancement stimulus parameters to assess their effects.
Compared results with previous findings on signal enhancement.

Main Results:

Masker enhancement effects were similar to previously reported signal enhancement effects.
Indicated a close relationship between masker and signal enhancement.
Observed an inverse relationship between suppression and enhancement, suggesting interrelation but not causation.

Conclusions:

Masker enhancement and signal enhancement are closely related auditory phenomena.
The data do not support the hypothesis that adaptation of suppression explains signal enhancement.
Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind auditory enhancement effects.
