Summary

Increased all-trans-retinoic acid (t-RA) in the retina of chicks with form deprivation myopia (FDM) suggests t-RA plays a role in myopia development. This study quantified t-RA levels in FDM retinas.

Background:

Retinoic acid receptor beta expression rises in chick sclera with form deprivation myopia (FDM).
All-trans-retinoic acid (t-RA) impacts scleral cell proliferation and differentiation.

Purpose of the Study:

Quantify t-RA levels in the retina of chicks with FDM.
Investigate the role of t-RA in the development of FDM.

Main Methods:

Form deprivation myopia (FDM) induced in 2-day-old chicks using translucent goggles.
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) used to analyze t-RA extracted from neural retina.
3H-t-RA utilized for normalization during analysis.

Main Results:

Retinal t-RA levels were significantly higher in myopic eyes compared to control eyes (p < 0.05).
t-RA concentration in myopic retina was 09.60 +/- 0.86 ng/eye (0.387 +/- 0.056 ng/mg protein).
t-RA levels increased in the retina within 5 days of visual deprivation.

Conclusions:

All-trans-retinoic acid (t-RA) concentration elevates in the retina following short-term visual deprivation in chicks.
These findings suggest a potential role for t-RA in the metabolic alterations associated with form deprivation myopia (FDM).
